Disability Care (NDIS) takes first steps

The NDIS is now entering its final stages with most areas either fully operational or in the process of being finalised. There are some teething problems and there has been a proposed change to the scheme that would disadvantage many people because it will restrict choice of provider and product if it goes ahead.

However, this proposal has yet to go before the minister and the more noise that is made to the relevant minister the less likely it will succeed. So if you are concerned, write to the minister and your local Federal MP. You can read the original proposal here and the Scooters Australia submission here.

There are various criteria for eligibility, but in the areas of mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs, the NDIS guidelines specify a broad cost structure that should ensure most basic mobility scooters and wheelchairs will be funded by the NDIA (NDIS).

You can read more about the Disability Care scheme here.

The Luggie portable scooter (seen here) fits the criteria for mobility scooters under the NDIS scheme. Read how one person, helped by occupational therapists from the ILC was supplied a Luggie under the scheme here.
