We’re 30 years young! 1922 – 2022
This year Scooters Australia turns 30 – the longest running mobility scooter business in Australia
Both current Directors started the business in 1992 and are still fully active in continuing to steer the business along its well worn path. And that means we know the scooter industry backwards.
Back then there were only a small number of scooter brands on the market, and at least 3 made in Australia. By the end of the 90’s all Australian manufacturers had ceased production and Chinese made products started to enter the market alongside Taiwanese manufacturers one of which had been here since the early 1990’s.
The early 2000’s saw a significant expansion in the market with the entry of US company Pride and a short time later Invacare (another US company), both of which import their scooters from Asia but send their profits back to the US.
“We’ve seen it all, right from the beginning,” says Peter Fraser, one of the directors.
“At first we concentrated on selling a large number of brands but over the time we made the decision to concentrate on a small number of better performing brands and started importing ourselves,” he said.
Now the Company only sells two brands of scooter – the Monarch, sourced from a long established Chinese company that has developed scooters on the advice and designs from the Directors, and the Freeerider brand from Taiwan, including the Luggie portable scooter.
“Our experience has taught us that too many choices confuses customers and in the end there are only 5 or 6 scooter sizes that are need to suit 90% of our clients,” said Mr Fraser.
Scooters Australia will continue the tradition of the last 30 years of supplying quality scooters at a reasonable price.
